The In-Community Events program assists and empowers
nursing home residents to remain part of a thriving
community environment for as long as they are willing
and able. For this group of individuals, participation
in community activities is among the factors that most
influence an individual's quality of life.
In order to increase accessibility to the arts for these
people, AUI seeks free admission to community
attractions, events, and activities that interest the
lives of everyday people. AUI maintains a healthy
relationship with community box offices, schools,
colleges and churches.

A facility’s individual use of these tickets often
depends on the time of the event or activity. Nursing
home residents greatly enjoy daytime activities. Their
deteriorating health conditions, such as unsteadiness
and poor eyesight, often leads to apprehensiveness
towards participating in evening activities. In
addition, qualified staff members who must accompany
nursing home residents are more available during daytime
hours. For these reasons, nursing homes often decline
tickets to evening events. As a result, residents of
subsidized independent living apartments use the
greatest majority of evening tickets. This group is
considerably more mobile, in better health, and more
willing to take part in evening activities.

In addition to in-kind ticket donations, AUI’s
In-Community Events program seeks funding to pay the
transportation expenses incurred by facilities that do
not own vehicles or lack the ability to transport
residents to community events and activities. For
individuals living in subsidized housing communities,
the cost of tickets is unaffordable and they often lack
a means of transportation. For these groups, AUI
provides free admissions and free transportation
allowing them to attend community events and activities.
